The Government guidelines apply to every employer

The UK Government has issued guidelines for returning to work safely following the Covid 19 pandemic. It recommends that everyone follow these guidelines no matter how many employees they have. If you employ more than 5 people you are required to record the findings of your Covid-19 risk assessment. The Government advises that you publish these on your company website and make them available to others on request.

There are eleven sector-specific guidelines with more to follow:

construction and other outdoor work
factories, plants and warehouses
working in other people's homes
labs and research facilities
offices and contact centres
restaurants, pubs, bars and takeaways
shops and branches
vehicles
close contact services
hotels and other guest accommodation
the visitor economy
heritage locations

If your business or organisation is in one of these sectors, you must assess the risks against the government guidelines and demonstrate that you have met all the requirements.

Your responsibilty as an employer

No matter how many people you employ, you are required by law to protect your employees, and others, from harm.

Under the Management of Health and Safety at Work Regulations 1999, the minimum you must do is:

  • identify what could cause injury or illness in your business (hazards)
  • decide how likely it is that someone could be harmed and how seriously (the risk)
  • take action to eliminate the hazard, or if this isn’t possible, control the risk

You must add provisions to protect people from the transmission of coronavirus to your existing risk assessments.
